STEP 1: Most come with a Getting Started Guide. Read it – it is not long and has all the important information in it.

STEP 2: To repair/re-set up your computer, you may be asked for a Microsoft product key. This is on a blue sticker labelled Microsoft Product Key, and you will see random letters and numbers. This is your Product Key for the operating system so it is important you maintain a copy of this key somewhere.

STEP 3: Now power on your pc/laptop, and follow the on screen instructions. It will eventually ask you for a user name and password. Decide what you will use and write them down if you don’t think you will remember them. First time on there are many steps to this, but once completed you are logged in as the name/password you chose. This is one level of security.

STEP 4: You need to create a set of recovery discs, which will help you to restore your pc/laptop back to factory settings if you run into a problem down the line. Most new pcs/laptops do not come with CD/DVD’s anymore, so it is best to create them first – before you go online. Things you will need to create your Recovery Discs: About 3-4 DVDs; Permanent Marker; And the most important thing – a cup of coffee or tea. This is going to take about 40 minutes, depending on the speed of your computer. Once you have burned all DVDs, store them in a safe place.

STEP 5: Enable Anti-virus – Purchase or use one you may have, and again take a note of the product key and how long the license lasts. Most Antivirus charge annually.

STEP 6: Update MS Windows will have been switched on as part of step 3, if you chose “Default (recommended)”. This ensures reputable software upgrades, primarily from MS Windows, can keep your system running. Although this is one of the reasons many pcs/laptops slow down with age, it also ensures your system is safe.
